CF 8 to CF 11 - Hoping?

I have CF v8 and want to get to v11 if possible. Never seen this product so I'm very new. This is going to be a virtual machine and I have access to MS SRV2012 and lower, I'd like to get to Srv2012 STD OR ENT. Current working system is - MS SRV 2003 STD, CF STD v8.0.1.195765, SQL 2005 Express and Autodesk Express Viewer. I want to get this system to the latest if at all possible. What I have to date - I found a login dashboard for CF administration but have no password for login. I have some questions to start me in any direction.:

1) License of CF installation to server. The server software may have differing types of license structures based on use. I'm hoping that because we're using CF STD I can stick to that version for 11.

2) Client license access. Clients who access the servers site or app may also need different types of licenses. Some will write some will query only.

3) Server installation itself:

3a) I will create a new server so I assume I'll not have upgrade as an option. I think this would be an new install and somehow drop exist data in old server into new. Migrate wizard or copy data and point to that data. I'm unclear at this juncture. Another option might be in install a trial version of CF 9 and step my way through multiple installs of the CF product until I reach my final server goal of CF 11. This might allow a migration path. My final server I would then license as production.

3b) There may be scripts, asp, java or something else in old system that would no longer function under a newer software version. This happens quite often because newer software is written in a more secure manner.

3c) SQL 2005 Express - I will need to setup different installs of this product. This way I can import the databases and they convert properly. Until I reach the latest version of SQL Express.

3d) I'll need to create a data source connection for ColdFusion 11 and latest SQL Express.

My luck I have this all wrong and need direction because I have no clue what I'm talking about.Back to the beginning of the circle - So where do I start?
